Five workers at a coal mine in northern Quang Ninh Province were killed after the mine collapsed on Monday.

The mine, part of a mining project of the Suoi Lai Mine by the Hon Gai Coal Company, encountered problems at around 10:10 p.m. Five workers inside were buried by rubbles as a result.

At the time of the incident, there were heavy rains in Ha Long City, causing inundations and erosion in certain areas.

Quang Ninh authorities, leaders of the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Holding Corporation which owns Hon Gai Coal Company, and other forces were dispatched to rescue the workers. By 5:28 a.m. Tuesday, all five workers had been taken out of the mine, but all had died. They were aged 23-47.

A representative of the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Holding corporation said the company would support each family of the diceased workers VND20 million ($791.23). The Hon Gai Coal company said it would support each family VND100 million.

In May, a mine of the Quang Hanh Coal company in Cam Pha City in Quang Ninh also collapsed, causing three deaths.
