Can Gio, HCMC's only seaside district, will need around VND76 trillion (US$3.24 billion) of investment in technical infrastructure and architecture to become a resort town.

The town will cover 2,870 hectares and house a population of more than 228,000, HCMC authorities said in a new detailed zoning plan with a scale of 1/5,000 for the town development.

Of the fund, VND32.5 trillion is for building infrastructure projects and around VND43.7 trillion is for refurbishment of architecture projects.

The town will include a public beach, resorts, a 155-hectare golf course, internal roads, parking lots, shopping malls, hotels, convention centers, tourist and service areas, hospitals, schools, office buildings, parks, and housing areas.

The government approved a plan for a sea reclamation project to develop Can Gio into a new urban area in June 2020, at a total cost of VND217 trillion.

The project will cost Can Gio Tourist City Corporation VND32.5 trillion, with the rest coming from commercial loans.

It will be implemented over 50 years and be put into use in 2070.

About 50 kilometers from downtown HCMC, Can Gio is home to a mangrove forest recognized as the first Mangrove Biosphere Reserve in Vietnam in 2000 by UNESCO.

The district spreads across 705 square kilometers, or one-third of HCMC’s total area, and has a population of 80,000.

Can Gio Bay will become the leverage to boost economic development in the future thanks to eco-tourism services and a deep-water port system.
