Three children between nine months and six years old were killed when fire erupted at a house in Da Lat in the Central Highlands Monday morning.

The fire started at around 10 a.m. at a wooden house on Nguyen Phi Y Lan Street and engulfed it several minutes later. Neighbors quickly came to the rescue but there was nothing they could do as the house was locked from outside.

The children just traveled with their mother from Binh Thuan Province in central Vietnam to Da Lat the previous day to visit their grandmother, who is a hired gardener for the owner of the house.

On Monday morning, the grandmother, 54, had gone out to work for another garden. The mother, 29, was cooking for her children when she decided to go out and buy some milk. She locked the door after forgetting to turn off the gas cooker, causing the fire to spread, according to police investigation.
