A traffic police representative said on Sunday the drivers of the 20 sports cars made by Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini committed multiple violations, including speeding, and many of the vehicles involved were unregistered and without license plates.
The cars "stormed" in a group on Friday night, blasting their horns along the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay highway, according to investigators.
Traffic police officers were dispatched to the Dau Giay toll booth in Dong Nai to stop the cars.
Some drivers caught wind of what was going on, so they stopped at a rest stop before the toll booth to evade traffic police officers.
But traffic officers were then dispatched to inspect the rest stop, where they found the cars and drivers in question. The alleged culprits then had no choice but to follow the police, who escorted them to the toll booth for further questioning.
The drivers said they were traveling to Phan Thiet, Binh Thuan Province, to attend a motor festival on Saturday. Some cars did not have license plates, possibly to avoid detection, a traffic police representative said. The drivers will be fined in the next few days, the representative added.
Cars speeding over 35 kph face fines of up to VND12 million ($504.31), and can have their drivers can have their driving licenses revoked for up to 4 months. Driving without a license plate results in a fine of up to VND12 million.
