The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has asked its officials to exercises twice a day, starting Tuesday.

To make it official, the ministry has even fixed the exercise times - at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.- with a session lasting at least five minutes.

The General Department of Sports and Physical Training has devised several sets of exercises suitable for people in different jobs. The ministry has publicized these instruction videos and asked officials to choose suitable ones, as also the other sports, for their daily practice.

Training centers and schools under the ministry’s administration are required to arrange schedules for teachers and students to take exercise breaks.

In a meeting last month, Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien had unexpectedly asked participants to stand up and do stretch and breathing exercises.

From the beginning of this year, the Health Ministry has asked staff to exercise in the middle of meetings, Tien said. This practice is being applied initially at the ministry, subordinate units, hospitals, preventative health centers.

The Health Ministry will also launch a fitness movement, encouraging people to exercise and also guide others to practice exercises towards improving health and preventing illnesses.

Vietnamese people are among the most sedentary in the world, a 2017 study by Stanford University found. It said Vietnamese people walk around 3,600 steps a day, far less than the global average of 5,000, leaving the country seventh from bottom in a ranking based on people’s physical activity.
