Attending an event organized by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to honor military and veteran caregivers on October 23, the former U.S. first lady wore a brown satin suit designed by Cong Tri.

The Vietnamese designer said he’d received an order to create a custom-made suit for an American female politician earlier this month, but did not know who it was until he saw Mrs. Obama wear it.

"I am surprised and proud. Her team approached and told me that they liked one of my designs at the New York Fashion Week. They wanted to have a similar outfit, but I had to customize it," said Tri.

He said it was the most careful customer he’s ever had in the U.S. Tri designed the suit and chose the color based on the measurement, preferences, physical characteristics and heel height he received from the customer.

He was also required to show a video of the fabric in natural light before making the final decision. The designer finished his work on the outfit in 2 days before sending it to the U.S.

The former first lady will visit Vietnam in December to promote the message of continued education for girls.

Last month, American actress Julia Garner and singer Camila Cabello also chose outfits from Tri’s latest collection to wear on special occasions.

Cong Tri has acquired an international following with several celebrities, especially Hollywood stars like Beyonce, Katy Perry, Kate Bosworth, Gabrielle Union, Cobie Smulders and Sophie Turner choosing to wear his creations.
