My mother-in-law keeps boasting about buying our house despite contributing little

Despite contributing only a quarter of the money to purchase our house, my husband’s mother constantly brags about paying for the house my husband and I now live in.

I’ve been married for two months, and both families supported us financially in buying our apartment, which cost around VND2 billion (US$79,745). My in-laws, who are less financially well-off, contributed VND500 million, while my parents contributed VND1 billion. To avoid any conflict or hurting my mother-in-law’s feelings, we decided not to disclose that my parents contributed more.

However, we didn’t expect my mother-in-law to frequently boast to relatives and even to my parents, claiming: "My husband and I paid for the house for the two of them, I doubt my in-law contributed much."

Initially, we thought her remarks were unintentional, but over time, she began "showing off" to my parents with comments that made them uncomfortable. Although my parents haven’t said anything, their attitude has grown distant, and they now avoid interacting with my mother-in-law. My husband and I feel stuck between the two families, frustrated and unsure how to address the issue.

If we reveal the truth, it will hurt my mother-in-law and strain our relationship with her. But if we remain silent, I fear the tension between the families will worsen.

What should I do to maintain harmony between both families?
