Song Luan was awarded the best actor in a leading role for "Descendants of the Sun Vietnam" at the Asian Academy Creative Awards.

The only Vietnamese actor to feature in the latest edition of the awards, Luan won the prize for his performance in Vietnamese TV serial "Hau Due Mat Troi" (Descendants of the Sun Vietnam).

Luan, 28, starred as captain Duy Kien in the Vietnamese version of the hugely popular South Korean serial.

The organizing board of AACA, one of the leading awards in the region that honors television programs, producers and outstanding individuals in the fields of film and television, announced last week the winners of each country in different categories.

Luan will attend a ceremony in Singapore to receive the award this December. He will share the stage with other leading actor winners like China’s Nie Yuan, chosen for his performance in drama series "Story of Yanxi Palace" and Indian actor Sumedh Mudgalkar for his performance in the serial "Radha Krishna".

The Vietnamese remake of "Descendants of the Sun", dealing with love on the battlefield also won the ‘Best Adaptation of an Existing Format’ category at this year’s AACA.

"Descendants of the Sun Vietnam" is a remake of the eponymous 2016 South Korean series that not only obsessed millions of Asian viewers but also caught the attention of politicians who have applauded the drama for its sense of sacrifice, loyalty and duty.

Directed by Tran Huu Loc, the series tells the story of officers of the NH1 Coast Guard fighting crime and protecting the country. It includes a love story between a captain and a female army doctor.

The movie became the first Vietnamese series to be screened on Netflix, one of the top media streaming platforms in the world, from September 1 this year.
