Critically acclaimed fighting scenes propel Furie to become Vietnam’s highest grossing movie of all time.

Action flick Furie, Hai Phuong in Vietnamese, which opened February 20 in Vietnamese cinemas, has collected VND200 billion ($8.6 million) so far, going past the VND190 billion ($8.2 million) grossed by romantic comedy Cua Lai Vo Bau (Winning Back My Pregnant Wife).

After its theatrical release in the U.S., it collected $600,000 in two weeks, according to Box Office Mojo.

In Vietnam, the film occupied many slots in leading cinema complexes like CGV, Lotte and Galaxy for the first two weeks. Furie has become a hit thanks to its breathtaking action and good release timing, said film distribution expert Xuan Phuc.

The film, directed by Le Van Kiet, tells the story of a former gangster’s journey to save her kidnapped daughter from human traffickers. It stars Ngo Thanh Van, aka Veronica Ngo, who is also the film’s producer.

The film was released in Vietnam, the U.S. and Canada. Van said it was a pity the film could not reach all audiences since U18 children are not allowed to watch it. The film is expected to be released in China but dates have not been announced yet.

Vietnamese films have been doing well this year. So far three have raked in over VND100 billion ($4.3 million), the other two being Winning Back My Pregnant Wife and Trang Quynh (Dr Quynh). Only six have crossed this mark in the last six years.
