Tang spoke openly about his love life at an entertainment industry party in Hong Kong on Monday, as reported by St Headline and HK01. He said though he has three girlfriends, he has no plans to have children, as he does not feel suited to raising them.
"Raising a child isn’t the hard part, educating them is."
Tang has been dating Carmen, Cherry and Nana for many years, and all three women have accepted the arrangement. They are occasionally seen going out together. Tang said he does not intend to have more partners because he "wouldn’t have enough time to divide among them."
He provides for the living and daily expenses of all three, who live in separate apartments in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai District, close to his own home. They do not live under one roof to ensure personal space and reduce the chances of conflicts, he said.
He also claimed he no longer has a sexual relationship with any of them, and they remain with him largely out of habit. He has been with Carmen and Cherry for some 30 years, and with Nana for more than five.
He described them as kind and easygoing, and said he has no intention of marrying any one since that would upset the other two. He worries about the long-term stability of marriages, he said.
"Having multiple partners isn't a good thing as it makes life much more complicated than it is for most people," he said. "I'm used to it, so it doesn't bother me, but I don't recommend that anyone should copy me. It creates countless problems."
Asked why he began seeing Nana when he already had two partners, he said: "When you get older, you realize that when fate comes, you can't escape it no matter how hard you try." While he wishes he could be loyal to one person, it is difficult for him to end the other relationships, he claimed further.
Tang has faced lots of criticism online for his lifestyle, including thousands of comments on Weibo.
"Why do men always want to flaunt how many women they have?" one user commented.
"Well, what can you do? Who doesn't like money?" another said.
Tang said: "I don’t need to explain my actions to outsiders. I’m often misunderstood, but that’s just who I am."
Tang, 58, entered the entertainment industry in 1994. He has appeared in numerous TVB productions, including "The Emperor and I," "Virtues of Harmony," "Taming of the Princess," "Time Before Time," "Journey to the West," "Burning Flame," "Gods of Honor," and "D.I.E. Again."
In the last decade he has shifted his focus away from acting and toward investment.
According to Mpweekly, Tang grew up in a wealthy family and inherited HK$460 million (US$59 million) from his parents.
