The revelations surfaced after Etta, 24, registered for a homeless shelter in Canada, where she has reportedly lived for more than 400 days, according to Chinese media outlet QQ on April 30. She is frequently seen queuing for free meals at a community relief station in Ontario, Canada. Some recognized her as Chan’s daughter when she removed her mask during ID verification.
Etta reportedly moved to Canada under an asylum program for LGBTQ+ individuals. She has no stable employment, occasionally works part-time at a restaurant, and has limited social connections. She has ended her relationship with her partner Andy, cut ties with her mother, and has no plans to return to Hong Kong.
She was raised solely by Elaine after the end of her relationship with Chan. Her upbringing was described as rigid and isolating, with Elaine reportedly enforcing harsh discipline, including forced kneeling and physical punishment without clear justification, according to KBizoom. Etta also faced bullying at school and social stigma for being Chan’s unacknowledged daughter. In her teens, she began rebelling and accused her mother of abuse, contacting authorities twice. At one point, she reportedly resorted to self-harm by cutting her wrists.

Etta’s situation has sparked widespread discussion online. Many have criticized Elaine for having a child she was unprepared to raise, while others condemned Chan for refusing to acknowledge his daughter. The backlash has extended beyond mainland China and Hong Kong, drawing international scrutiny.
Chan, 71, considered one of the most iconic martial arts actors in cinematic history, has appeared in over 150 films across a six-decade career. He married actress Joan Lin in 1982, and the couple has a son, Jaycee Chan. In 1999, Chan admitted to having an affair with Elaine, who was 19 years his junior and pregnant at the time. He later apologized publicly to his wife and son and expressed regret in his memoir "Never Grow Up".

According to the South China Morning Post, Chan said the matter was "never mentioned again" and cut off contact with Elaine after learning of the pregnancy. Etta grew up without knowing her father. In a 2015 interview with U.K’s news outlet Express, she said: "He is not my dad. I have no feelings for him. He is my biological father but he is not in my life."
Elaine rose to fame after winning Miss Asia in 1990 at age 17. She went on to act in several Hong Kong films, including "King of Killers", "Two Rooms One Wife." She raised Etta as a single mother despite facing financial struggles and public scrutiny. Elaine now lives alone in Hong Kong following her daughter’s departure.
