Alyssa Chia’s 9-year-younger husband says he feels ‘guilty’ for attempting to evade military service

Xiu, 42, was arrested on Tuesday and questioned about the falsification before being released on bail of NT$500,000 (US$16,244). He admitted he was in normal health but had paid NT$150,000 to fake medical records to show he had hypertension to avoid military service.

In the event, his exemption request was denied and he had to enlist in 2016 for a one-year term. But he was discharged after five months Due to Chia’s pregnancy.

Through his management company, Xiu apologized publicly and said he is fully cooperating with authorities.

"As a husband and a father, I feel deeply guilty for causing my wife and children fear and worry."

Under Taiwanese law, falsifying health information to evade military service carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

At the time of Xiu’s arrest, Chia was filming in Macau. She said their children were terrified after witnessing their father being handcuffed and expressed concern for their well-being.

The 51-year-old had married him in 2015 and they have two daughters.

Chia is known for her roles in television series such as "The Prince of Han Dynasty," "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber," "Lady Wu: The First Empress," and "The World Between Us." She won Best Leading Actress at the 2019 Golden Bell Awards for "The World Between Us" and a Golden Horse Award in 2021 for "The Falls."

Xiu is known for his roles in TV series "Black and White" and "Light the Night" and the movie "At the Moment."
