Vietnam thrashed Singapore 7-0 in their Group C opener of the AFF U23 Youth Championship at Prince Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Saturday.

Due to Covid-19, Singapore only had three substitute players, including two goalkeepers.

Vietnam opened the score in the third minute with a header from Nguyen Van Tung after receiving the ball from Dung Quang Nho.

Singapore got a corner kick in the 12th minute, but Ilhan Fandi’s header was blocked by defender Nguyen Van Son who stood right at the goal-line.

The second goal came in the 32nd minute with Dinh Xuan Tien essaying a skillful curler from outside the box.

The team pocketed another goal not long after when Tran Van Thang made a pass for Tung to kick the ball right in the Singapore's empty net. Vietnam maintained its dominance in the second half of the game, widening the gap even further after Nho scored another goal in the 56th minute. Substitute Nguyen Ngoc Thang found Singapore's net again in the 78th minute and Nguyen Thanh Khoi another in 89th minute.

In the 95th (90+5) minute, Vu Tien Long sealed a resounding 7-0 triumph for Vietnam.

The victory put Vietnam on top of Group C, above Thailand on goal difference. These two teams will play each other Feb. 22 for a direct slot into the semifinal.

Vietnam only needs to draw the last group match to enter the semi-finals. Even if they lose, Vietnam can continue as a second-placed team.
