"Glorious Ashes" by Bui Thac Chuyen has become the first Vietnamese film to enter the main Competition section at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

It will go up against 14 movies from around the world, including Spain's "Manticore" and Italy's "The Fabulous Ones," for the main prize this year.

"Glorious Ashes" tells the relationships between three women and their partners in a seaside village in the southern Ca Mau Province.

It is based on a novel by internationally famous writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu, who has won various honors, including the 2008 Southeast Asian Writers Award.

It will also be the film's world premiere.

The organizers will announce the screening schedule later this month.

This year's TIFF takes place from October 24 to November 3. It has received 1,695 entries from 107 countries and territories.
