The Marvel superhero movie 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' grossed VND19.7 billion ($858,108) on the first day of release.

Its distributor said there were over 4,000 shows on Wednesday, with 120,000 tickets sold, earning the highest opening revenue this year.

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' achieved a similar feat at the end of last year.

If its current momentum is any indication, it could become the first film this year to surpass the VND100-billion mark.

The Doctor Strange series is part of the Marvel cinematic universe based on the superhero of the same name.

He is an American doctor, played by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who goes to Nepal to treat injuries and acquires supernatural powers.

America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, the first child superhero, appears in the film. She has the ability to create portals through which she can travel between universes and becomes the target of dark forces.

Strange and his teammates must stand up in part two to protect her.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a ‘fresh’ rating of 78 percent from 181 critics.

In the comments section, many people have appreciated the entertainment and how the team chooses and develops the Marvel Cinematic Universe's available storylines.

According to the entertainment website Variety, the movie collected over $27 million on its first day in 20 overseas markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea.
