Two girls aged three and seven were abducted from HCMC's Nguyen Hue pedestrian plaza to make child pornography, the police said.

Their abductor, Pham Huynh Nhat Vi, 21, has been arrested by the District 1 police, facing charges for "employment of a person under 16 for pornographic purposes."

They said while Vi claimed to have taken the two girls home to "raise them," several pieces of evidence suggest that her real purpose was to make pornographic videos with them for sending to pedophiles abroad.

The Saigon Pearl apartment in Binh Thanh District where the abducted girls were taken is rented by a foreign man for Vi.

There the police found several porn videos ordered from abroad.

On April 3 street vendor Nguyen Thi Chi, 27, said two of her children went missing after she briefly left them in the care of another vendor.

Every day she drives with the four on a motorbike from District 7 to Nguyen Hue Street to sell snacks from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Her eldest child, 10, takes care of the youngest, who is nine months old, while she and the other two walk around selling snacks.

Two hundred police officers were dispatched to search for them.

After analyzing camera footage, they found Vi approaching the missing girls, luring them with money, and taking them with her her to the apartment in a cab.

The girls were rescued when the police raided the apartment on Tuesday.

An investigation is ongoing.
