Automaker VinFast has set in motion its plans to integrate electric vehicle charging stations with gas stations with its first coming up at PVOIL pump.

The station is in Cat Hai District in Hai Phong, and is equipped with one 150-kilowatt superfast charger and five 60-kW fast chargers, which can serve 12 vehicles at a time.

Integrating EV chargers with gas stations also dovetails with PVOIL’s plans to become a modern energy supplier, which it announced at its annual general meeting in April.

"PVOIL will provide customers with not only petroleum products but also electricity and hydrogen," chairman Cao Hoai Duong had said.

This year VinFast plans to open 300 charging points at PVOIL’s stations, its EV charging network center director Vu Thang said.

On June 3 VinFast also signed an agreement with Petrolimex, another fuel distributor, to build charging facilities at its gas stations.

PVOIL and Petrolimex are the two largest fuel retailers in Vietnam, with the former having over 3,500 outlets and the latter, 5,500.

To promote the use of electric vehicles, the government offers various incentives including a cut in excise and waiver of the registration fee for three years.

But experts called on the government to also develop standards and policies for charging stations, saying charging points should be mandatory for urban and transport infrastructure.
