Almost 4,000 households will be relocated to make way for the North-South Expressway and funds will be allocated before the second quarter.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The said at a meeting Thursday that over 4,800 hectares (18.53 square miles) of land in 13 provinces would be acquired for the road. The cost is estimated at VND12.4 trillion ($533.8 million).

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said since the expressway is an important socio-economic project it needs to be completed early and should be of outstanding quality.

"The Ministry of Transport must make public the project progress and hand over funds to the provinces before the second quarter so that the land acquisition could be completed soon."

Minister The has said 11 components of the expressway will get top priority this year, and his ministry aims to complete acquisition of lands next year.

Three of the components will be publicly funded and the rest under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Work on two of the three public-funded sections is likely to begin in the second quarter of this year.

Bidding for the private-funded works would begin next October, he said.

The 11 sections are expected to cost VND118 trillion ($5.06 billion), with VND55 trillion ($2.36 billion) to be provided by the government.

Together, they will comprise 654 kilometers out of the 2,000-kilometer expressway from Nam Dinh near Hanoi to Vinh Long Province to the southwest of Ho Chi Minh City.

The expressway is scheduled to be finished in 2025.
