EYFS: Setting the stage for success with an early start

October 23, 2019 | 08:00 pm PT
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework creates a positive learning environment for young children.

The EYFS framework sets the standards for optimal learning, development and safety of children from birth to five years old, according to Early Years Alliance, a registered educational charity organization in the UK with 14,000 members.

Research in the field of early childhood clearly demonstrates that the early experiences of children have a significant impact on their future learning. It is at this stage that the foundation is set for their future, in learning key skills that shape their awareness and understanding of themselves, their families and the wider community.

Children develop in the context of relationships and the environment around them. This is unique to each family, and reflects individual communities and cultures. (Early Education: Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage. www.early-education.org.uk).

Therefore, the EYFS sees each child as unique, developing at a different pace to their peers. Each child will have their own interests and needs met and be challenged in meaningful and authentic ways.

This is why many early childhood settings use play and a child-centred approach to learning. Through play, children are given opportunities to discover and experience the world, from which they learn how to share, communicate and interact with others.

The EYFS framework focuses on the seven areas of learning and development that form the educational programme. There are three prime areas of development that are fundamental - communication and language skills; personal, social and emotional development; and physical development.

These are supported and further strengthened through the four specific areas of literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design. All areas are interconnected and explored in a variety of ways.

The ways in which the child engages with other people and their environment playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child in remaining an effective and motivated learner. Providing opportunities for children to make mistakes and actively participate in their own learning is what the Early Years programme at Renaissance International School Saigon is proud to endorse as good teaching practice.

"From birth through to five years old is a time of rapid brain growth, when a child's intellect, behaviour and personality form. The nature of this development, and the experiences a young child has, can have an impact on the life chances they will have as an adult. The best support a child can have is good parenting matched with high quality learning," said Peter Spratling, Head of Early Years and Primary, Renaissance International School Saigon.

"At Renaissance, we use The Early Years Foundation Stage to provide a good educational environment for young children. The connections we make with parents support our students to give them the very best start in life possible."

The educational environment is carefully and thoughtfully planned for. It sets out to inspire young children, nurture their growth and ensure wholesome development. Teaching staff at Renaissance work together with parents to provide the best possible outcomes for their children. Parents who take an active and supportive role in their children's education have a positive impact on continued learning.

According to Early Years Alliance (2019), working in partnership with parents and/or carers is central to the Early Years Foundation Stage. Consulting them about childrens early experiences helps practitioners plan for effective learning at the setting, and helps them support parents in continuing their children's learning at home.

Renaissance International School Saigon employs experienced teachers with internationally recognized Early Childhood qualifications.
