Singapore public bus operator SBS Transit announced the May 27 launch of three new bus services, numbered 20A, 39A and 39B, in Simei, Changi, Pasir Ris and Punggol planning areas.

These are short-trip services that ply smaller routes that usually see high commuter volume within existing services, The Straits Times reported, citing SBS Transit’s official announcement on Monday.

These routes are designed to serve high-demand areas, such as those near metro (MRT) stations or schools with heavy passenger traffic.

Service 20A will operate during the peak morning hours on weekdays, connecting the bus stop on Simei Street 1, near Block 148, to the one on Changi South Avenue 1, near Expo MRT Station’s Exit B.

This route is introduced to better serve commuters traveling towards Changi Business Park, according to the announcement.

Service 39A will serve transport passengers between the bus stop at Pasir Ris Central, opposite Pasir Ris MRT Station’s Exit B, and the one at Jalan Kayu, after Seletar Camp Gate, during both morning and evening rush hours on weekdays, The New Paper reported.

The third route, 39B, will operate on weekday mornings, plying from the bus stop on Punggol Way, in front of Block 220C, to the bus stop at Pasir Ris Central, near Pasir Ris MRT Station’s Exit B.

All three new services will not operate on weekends and public holidays.

Public buses make 3.5 million trips per day on more than 350 scheduled services across Singapore, according to the city-state’s Land Transport Authority.

These services are operated by four companies, namely SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit Singapore, and Go-Ahead Singapore.

Last year, SBS Transit posted S$69.1 million (US$51.3 million) in net profit, up 1.5% from 2022, according to the company's website.
