Ho Chi Minh City has declared a Zika epidemic after a female resident living in a central district was confirmed to have contracted the mosquito-borne virus, the municipal government said in an official letter on Friday.

The city's People’s Committee has instructed the local health sector and district authorities to take immediate measures to stop the virus from spreading.

It has also asked relevant authorities to monitor the situation and step up measures to eradicate mosquitoes and their larvae to prevent a hot spot from developing.
